My advice. Bookmark http://perldoc.perl.org/index-functions-by-cat.html. Don't try to read it. Now read through http://www.perl.org/books/beginning-perl/. Try to follow what it says but don't worry about really mastering it. Then on a Unix system do perl -MCPAN -e 'install Catalyst::Manual::Tutorial' This will lead you through a bunch of questions and will install a *ton* of stuff. (If you're not happy with your answers you can control C out then try again.) If you run into problems on your installation (which unfortunately is quite possible) then you can ask for help either here or at http://www.perlmonks.org/. (You can also ask at stackoverflow. I haven't paid attention, so that might have a decent Perl community by now. Or might not. Perlmonks has a built up community and history though.) After that try to work through http://search.cpan.org/~hkclark/Catalyst-Manual-5.8004/lib/Catalyst/Manual/Tutorial.pod. Expect to have to refer back to Beginning Perl plenty of times. When that fails Google it. Then come back and keep going. Any time you run across a module that looks important, be sure to bookmark it. Given your background and how many digressions you will need, plan on that tutorial taking 2 weeks to go through. It could be more, it could be less. But it will be a substantial hunk of time. By the time you are done you should have learned enough to put together a small database backed website. At that point you should be ready to take on a simple project. Follow the structure of the tutorial fairly closely as you do it. When you're done that you'll be ready for bigger challenges, and can learn more. If you get that far, lots of people will have lots of things to suggest.
