I think the exercise was akin to lockpicking:
yes a crowbar will do the same job, but that
wasn't the point. Can it be done without physical
destruction?

The one example where this actually is important,
is if you're returning a drive under warranty.
You want to wipe the data, but you can't take
the drive apart and still get you're money back.

In that case, if the 4-pin wire goes to a removable
connector, then plug it into a board that drives the
appropriate signals, (hm, I wonder if you could do it
with some 555's or something), and then reconnect it
to the controller board in the drive, drop it in a box
and ship it back for warranty money.
