I figured the riddle of the hot-plugging: I re-seated the sata controller, and then used
modprobe -r sata_via modprobe -a sata_via to force an lsscsi refresh I was able to perform a secure erasure again successfully (78 minutes), but I haven't figured yet what's up with the drive we b0rked yesterday.
