And yet the the slide decks that kicked this all off recommended stripping out all sorts of functions (which nobody is forced to use) that are useful for this and other purposes. It's not as if Perl's namespace is anywhere near as bad as PHP's, so the call to strip out tie, UN*X functions, etc. makes no sense to me.
