Hi Jonathan,
I was very sorry to read of this tragic news. My condolences go out to
everyone who knew both of them. They will certainly be missed.

>All, with the Internet being what it is and the news media in new Zealand
>now reporting the story, I feel I should mention here on the list that
>tragically, HumanWare's Chief Executive Dr. Russell Smith and his wife
>Marian have been killed in a plane crash. I'm sure the company will place a
>statement on the web site at some point, but of course right now those of
>us who knew them are deeply shocked and devastated by the news. I have
>already written my own personal tribute to Russell on my blog. He is a man
>I respected deeply and like many in the company I feel his loss deeply. I
>would like to reassure you that the last thing Russell would want us to do
>is to drop the ball. Many of us are upset, but we're still here to serve.
>HumanWare is a very strong company and Russell mentored us well. Perhaps
>you might like to be a little gentle with us over the next few days. This
>is in no way a formal statement, but I thought it would be appropriate to
>say something before someone finds it on the web, now that the news media
>is running the story. It is of course headline news here because Russell
>was one of New Zealand's most successful businessmen. He was also one of
>the most brilliant people I ever met.
