Hi Wendy, the primary advantage to getting your son's BrailleNote talking with a cell phone would be that it can be used as a wireless modem. This may or may not be a need he has, but it's something I use very regularly. Once he gets his BraillenOte mPower, this connection can be made completely wirelessly using the built-in Bluetooth capability.
There are some very accessible cell phones out these days. If you want to explore phone choices a little more, since it is straying off topic a little for the BrailleNote list, you might consider joining the Blind Phones list.
