Its possible you selected a pedestrian route and in this case the system
will not have you cross a, potentially, dangerous street. The map system
has specific ratings on the roads and freeways in order to keep the GPS
user from walking onto the freeways.
Try creating a vehicular route and see if it allows you to cross.

I haven't investighated the maps that came with my magellon that came with
my voicenote. They are really bad for my town, and I'd like to see if they
can be updated to be more useful. In our town Highway 101 is simply two
roade one running each direction. They are simple two lane streets with
parking along the sides an regular intersections. The GPS maps think they
are freeways or something and make you route all the way out of town to
where they join, then back in agan rather than simply going across the
street. It's kind of funny, but makes the route pretty useless. They also
have a diagnoal road cutting through town that doesn't actually go through
town. Ah well, maps are not us.
