Dear Ann,

Your comments are excellent, but I have one correction. The proper grade of
braille to use for computer braille is grade 0. Grade 1 uses different
symbols for its punctuation than grade 0. For example, grade 1 uses dots
2,5,6 for a period, but grade 0 uses dots 4,6; a colon in grade 1 is dots
2,5 but in grade 0 it's dots 1,5,6; the semicolon is dots 2,3 in grade 1 and
dots 1,5,6 in grade 0, etc.

Computer braille can be written in 6 or 8 dots using the BN. There isn't a
way to write 8 dot braille using a brailler or slate.

I may add here that any braille written in computer braille on a BN will be
recognized by the full version of Duxbury.

: Hi all,
:
: You need to write in grade I for web and email addresses because there
: are symbols in such things which are exclusive to web and email
: addresses. Remember that a computer is *not* a human being and it
: must be told how to parse (make sense of) the symbols. Braille only
: has a finite number of ways to combine the six dots. Many of these
: combinations are used in several different ways depending on the
: situation. Do you remember Isaac complaining that the list of web
: addresses I put up here was "dirty", and had many errors in it? That
: is because it was taken from a Braille File which had been improperly
: written.
:
: Because a computer or BN is a literal beasty, you have to tell it that
: this next little bit is a URL or email address. You can't change this
: behavior, not unless you find some way to put a human brain in a
: BrailleNote. Think of it like communicating with someone who speaks
: French. You need to speak French to that person if you want them to
: understand important information, especially if their English is not
: too good. <smile>
