Don, I think you might have the answer there. I've recently downloaded a few .bin files and noticed that the file types listed are AVG and All Types. Since I've wanted a file which is nothing to do with AVG I have chosen the latter.

Instead of getting the standard dialog box for download where you can choose a download directory, the download starts immediately to a temporary folder instead, and to get it into my downloads directory I have to do a "save as" once the download to the temp directory is complete. But, the download speed itself seems okay. So, you might check your listing of file types to see just what programs the .bin files is associated with. Do you get the standard download dialog where you can change the file name and also the path to where it's being downloaded? Not sure just where to tell you to look for the filetypes and their associations as just don't do it enough to remember.
