Both windows 2000 and a Linux pc can accommodate a card reader, although
the only files you'll probably be able to read, will exclude keyword
documents, but txt could be read anywhere, and rtf definitely under
windows 2000.

Subject: re: [Braillenote] flash card questions looking to purchase one
or more

Lisa, I'm going to go through your questions, and try to see what I can
help you with.

> >1. If I backed up my files onto a flash card from the BN could
these files be retrieved on a PC using the flash card? In other words
can flash cards be inserted into PC's? If so do the PCS have to run
Windows XP or are flash cards compatible with Windows 98 or older? I ask
because at work I don't think our computers are running Windows XP.
The files I would be concerned with saving onto a flash card are for
work.

>Answer to question one. I don't believe cf card slots were put into
the pc until Windows XP. If you are running Windows 98, the cf card
wouldn't necessarily help.

2. I would like to be able to maybe look into downloading MP3 files
from the Internet to a flash card. From reading the manual I gather
that the flash cards are put in the back slot of the BN. Is this
correct? This concerns me since I insert my Etheernet card in the back
slot of my BN. This would make downloading MP3's directly to the flash
card impossible. Maybe those CF cards are the answer.

>Answer to question two. If you have a PCMCIA card, your cf card can be
inserted into the side of your BN. You are right about the button on
the right side of the BN. There is no button on the back. Some cf
cards may be a little thicker, making them a little harder to get out of
the back slot. The upgrade card was one of these that seemed to fit a
little tighter. You can download MP3 FILES ON TO A CF CARD, AND PLAY
THEM IN THE Bn. It won't matter if the card is on the side or in the
back. You can purchase a PCMCIA card for a cf card for around $9.00.

>4. I've seen posts before about a flash card reader. Do I need to
purchase that in order to put information from my flash cards onto a PC?
>5. When I back up my files onffo the flash card do they have to be
saved in Microsoft Word or some other format other than Keyword braille
files to be translated okay on the PC? I'd hate to save all of my files
and have them be jibberish once transfered to the PC.
>I think the flash cards are the best way for me to back up my files. I
just want to make sure this works out okay what positives and negatives
come with using flash cards?
Lisa, a pc will not read KeyWord documents. Yes, you are correct when
you say that you need to save them to a different format, such as an rtf
format, Ascii, or a Microsoft Word.
Hope this has helped you a little bit.
Regards,
Rhonda
