The Humanware office basically said the same, but surely even if the 
battery is dead, the BN should run off the mains?

This is Joseph. If the battery gauge indicates that
the battery has been remaining at 1% for over 24
hours, that means you have to replace the battery.
When you connect the AC power BN should detect it and
pop0up and say "AC adapter on." If it isn't then you
should check the power sourse is connected. Based on
the specifications you have outlined, it is likely
that your BN's battery needs replacing. It costs
around $80 US. I hope this information may help you.
