Hi Carol, no problem. >From the Main Menu, choose the Media Center. Then press r to record a memo. You will then hear "start recording using X" where X is internal or external microphone depending on how you've configured the options. At this point, you can use space with dot 6 and space with dot 3 to make minor adjustments to the levels. To test the effect this is having, press T. You'll hear the recording beep, and you can say a few words, or for that matter, sing a few lines if that takes your fancy. Then you can press t again to stop recording. Press P to play the test back. Continue this process until your levels are how you want them, then go ahead and press Y or the record button to start the actual recording.

I don't recall the specifics and haven't done it yet so, go on, tell us all! Hi Casey, do you know about the cool test recording feature in the recording options? This is a really quick and easy way to make fine adjustments. I can explain further if you want. I had to try it probably about 10 times before I got the right settings.
