Leslie, An external modem is an easy connection to do. You just need the correct com port number, the correct modem initization string and all that good stuff. You need a modem program like Telix or Procomm plus. Perhaps you need a pocketpc modem program. I've never thought of doing it this way. maybe Dean can shed some more light on this one.
