Jim,
I am really touched realizing how much time it must have taken to
explain things so thoroughly.
There is one question. You give a dot command used with the BT. What is
the QT command?
My sincere thanks.

Hi KC,
Your Romeo RB25 has sixteen configuration menus in it. I remember
changing
one option in menu two but can't recall what that option was which gave me
a proper menu for using a serial device. I'd put paper in your
Romeo. Type on its keyboard 0 point 1 enter, 2 point V enter. The V Key
which stands for view is the bottom key in the extreme right column of
keys. What you will be doing is printing out the settings of menu two
while
still in your menu one configuration. Take this out of your embosser once
it is embossed and keep it handy so you can refer to it now and
later. Menu two according to my embosser is set up for the apple Super
Serial Card. The option in question which needs to be changed is option
eight which is handshaking. Its default in this menu is printer busy is
xon xoff. I would change this to printer busy is DTR high when ready,
host busy is cts. This is changed by doing the following entry:
zero point two enter, eight point one enter, one point one enter.
Before I go on, let me speak with the rest of you looking over my shoulder
so to speak. The choices for handshaking according to the manual are:
8.0, equals xon/xoff, 8.1, equals DTR and CTS, 8.2 equals DTR and DSR, 8.3
equals RTS and CTS, and 8.4 equals RTS and DSR. If anyone here has a
better suggestion, feel free to pass it on. I believe I changed that
option to 8.1, printer busy is DTR high when ready, host busy is CTS.
This
is 8.1 on the menu selection. This is what is used with the parallel port
and IBM settings.
Back to business again. The rest of the settings in menu two should agree
with the serial port settings in the M-power. The only thing the M-power
doesn't mention in the settings is the stop bits which are set to one with
the embosser. I'd leave that as is. Anyone with a better suggestion,
please pass it on.
Let's check settings in the M-power. Let's check the embosser setup
first. Go to word processor, press E to emboss a document. The M-power
will prompt emboss or set up embossor? Type S. You should see embosser
setup list. The first thing listed is paper length 25, paper width 40,
Use
form feeds between pages? Currently Yes, Pause after each page, currently
no. Does your embosser emboss both sides of the page? Currently no!
Leave
it that way! Page offset, currently zero. Embosser port? Currently
USB. Type S for Serial Port. Get out your menu printout again and
compare
the next settings with it. Embosser port, currently serial. Baud
Rate? Currently 9600. Parity? Currently none. Number of data bits?
Currently eight. Hand Shaking? Currently software. The M Power doesn't
mention the one stop bit but I wouldn't worry at this time.
If you are using narrower paper, I would change paper width to 32 in your
BN instead of 40 while in the embosser setup list. If wide paper is used,
keep the original settings. Exit the setup menu. The M-power will ask
confirm changes? Type Y for yes.
I would next check the page settings in the format menu. To get there,
press spacebar with dots 2, 3, 4, 6 while a document is opened. Perhaps
it
would be best to open the document you are about to emboss. Space
through
the options in the format menu till you reach page settings, press enter
here. You should see page settings list. First page number 1. Paper
length? using the standard embosser setting of 25. Paper Width? using the
standard embosser setting of 40. Top margin zero, bottom margin 0. If
you
are using narrow paper, set paper width to 32 here as well. This needs to
agree with the setting in the embosser setup list. If wide paper is used,
don't change the setting.
Let's attempt to emboss your document. Be certain the Romeo RB25 is in
menu two by typing on the keypad, zero point two enter one point one
enter. The embosser resets and places you in menu two. Plug the cord
supplied with the M-power into the serial port of your embosser and the
serial port of the M-power. Needless to say, have paper in the
embosser. Be sure the embosser is on line. It usually is after typing
the
menu two sequence mentioned above. From the main menu, type W for word
processor or space to get the word processor option. Type E to emboss a
document. You will see the question emboss or set up embosser? Type E
to
emboss the document. You will be prompted for folder and file
name? Select the file and press enter or if the filename you want is
already showing press enter. The BN will say embosser ready? Type Y for
yes or press enter. If all is well, the embossing should take place. If
not, more possibilities will need to be checked. Perhaps a similar cable
will need to be purchased which isn't a null modem cable. If the cable
works, then I'd say you are good to go. If you wish to emboss from your
PC, select menu one by typing on the Romeo Keyboard, zero point one enter
one point one enter. This resets the embosser and you are in menu one and
can print from the parallel port with your PC. To print from the serial
port of your embosser with the M-power, go to menu two by typing on your
Romeo Keyboard zero point two enter one point one enter. This brings you
back to your menu two settings and you are ready to emboss with the
M-power
if all worked from before. The Romeo remembers all settings so you need
only change menus in the embosser and cables from the PC to the M-power.
Keep us posted! HTH Feel free to forward this post to Enabling
Technologies. Their web site is www.brailler.com. You can get their
contact information from there.

Dear Terri,
I have been using the paralel port on my laptop for the Embosser. That
isn't an option with the Mpower Transplant. There is USB, but not on the
Embosser.
If Jim can set me straight, I'd be grateful. However, I'll try to call
Enabling Technologies on Monday and hope I can reach someone. (Getting
through with the Relay, using my TDD, is not always considered the best
way to go. If anyone knows an E-Mail address I could use instead, please
pass it along and thanks.)

Dear KC,
I have just ordered an infrared to parallel adapter from Enabling
Technologies. I don't know if it will work on my Everest-D embosser,
but
I'm going to try it.
A person on the list who has an embosser sold by Enabling Technologies
is
Jim Aldrich. Perhaps he'll jump in with some ideas for you.
As for my braille, I enjoy it and I use it a lot, but the NLS folks
didn't
think it was good enough to meet their standards. (grin). But I have
sent
many .brf files to people and they haven't complained about my braille.

Dear Terri,
I know where you are coming from in learning what you need to know on
our
own. However, I suspect you are a proficient braille user, and that
helps
when dealing with the embossing issue.
Wow! I can't beleive I've found somoene who HATES MS-Word! The day I
had
to stop using Word Perfect was a sad one. (That was all we were
allowed
to use at work!)
I have a Romeo-25 embosser. As yet, I haven't figured out how it
would
work with the BN or my new Mpower Transplant. If anyone on the List
has
experience using their embosser with Mpower, I hope they will share
it
with us.
(Good luck Terri. I'm sure you'll have a handle on the embossing
issue
before long! :-)

Dear KC,
I'm not really that smart. I learn what I need to know to do the
things I
want and that's it. I hate MS Word and I use it as little as
possible.
Ido
as much of my editing on the BrailleNote.
I hope to be able to emboss with my MP soon. Right now, I must use
either
the PC or the BN classic.

Training is a crucial issue. (Terri, you must be pretty shart to
pick
up a lot on your own. Some folks just get too frustrated, or may be
new
to blindness and easily discouraged.)
I agree that it would be wonderful to use my BN for everything.
The
only thing I don't do with it is stuff that has to be printed or
brailled
in hard copy. (I download books and shop for groceries with it.)
I'm
especially thankful for the "no virus" bit, because updating your
atni-virus progrma when using dial-up can be a pain in the butt!

I've had no training. I just picked up things as I went along from
other
people. I'm sure most people know more than I.
If I could, I'd use my BN for everything.

Hi all,
Terri, some people have never been trained properly to use the
open or
the save as dialog in Windows. That isn't her fault.
Mary Ellen, the Save As dialog has several options in it. You
can,
as Terri suggests type the drive name in the edit field for your
book,
but you do not have to do that. If you simply press shift-tab,
you
will land in a list box which is the list of all the files in your
My
Documents folder. Use the backspace to exit to your desktop, then
choose My Computer, arrow down to whatever you call your flash
drive,
press enter, then tab to the edit field, type in your file name,
and
voila!
