Terry, you do have a choice, you can either listen to the radio with headphones 
or the built-in speaker.  However, it is necessary to have headphones plugged 
in, because the headphone cable acts as the radio antenna, just like in a 
walkman.  There is an option to turn on and off the speaker while the radio is 
on.
