This is Joseph. If the card is working preperly but if you have trouble inserting the card, then maybe one of the pins might have been broken. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Peggy Kern" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Subject: [Braillenote] Broken card?

Hi, guys. I had an experience today I've never had before, and want to get your thoughts on it. I'll need to give you some background first.

In April, 2001, I bought a pcmcia card (my first-ever memory card) from Humanware. I've used it both at home and at work for all these years, and have tons of different types of files on it: my journal, books, a Bible, work stuff, etc., etc., etc. I keep it in the zipper compartment in my mPower case. Every morning I take it out, put it in a little coin purse, which I then put either in my purse or pocket, take it to work and pop it into the slot on my BN (a classic, with the original mother board with just the side slot), where it stays all day. When I go home, I pop it out, put it back into its coin purse, take it home and put it back into the zipper compartment of the mPower case, where it stays unless/until I need something from it. It worked fine yesterday. Well, this morning when I got to work, it wouldn't insert into my BN. I rotated it in several different directions off and on for several minutes, and still it wouldn't go. I have the SuperDisk drive at work, so tried inserting the card from that, which went in easily. Finally, after nearly an hour, in between doing my work duties, the card eventually went in. I'm very gentle with my cards, never forcing them, even if I know they're going in the right way. I don't want to damage anything. Anyway, I used the card the rest of the day, and then when I got home, I inserted it into the mPower to see what would happen. It started to stick when it was almost in, but then slid in with no problem, and was recognized and useable. All other cards worked fine, without sticking. I then tried to insert it into my card reader, and had the same problem I'd had with my BN at work. My husband tried, and after jiggling it a little, it worked okay in the card reader with the 'puter. From all my experiences, I'm thinking my pcmcia card might be going bad, or that something might be bent on it, though I don't know how that could happen, since, as I said, I'm very careful with my cards. There does seem to be a slight dent in the surface of the card. My husband also said it's possible that one of the little teeth on the card could be bent a little.

So I'm wondering if any of you have had experiences like this. Do cards eventually wear out? Now that it's working again, is there any danger to my mPower at home or my BN at work if I continue to use the card until I can get a new one? According to my husband, if it's a bent tooth on the card, it just won't go in far enough to damage any pins on the machines, but since these machines aren't cheap, I don't want to take any chances. Thoughts?

Peggy
