Hi Rusty and list, I've had a look at mp3 recording and it appears to be technically possible to do (we seem to have enough processing power), although not at an amazingly high quality. It would be great for recording classes, for example, you'd get about 10 times more recording time. And we could probably do a high quality mp3 compression but not in real-time. I can send an example mp3 of some compressed speech if anyone is interested - just email me off list so I can reply directly to you - I'd like to hear if you think the quality is acceptable, and how useful it would be. The lowest quality one sounds much like high-quality synthesized speech to me.
But there's still a lot of work to do and it may turn out to be a lower priority than some of the other work we're doing.
