Hi Wil, Well, if you asked about upgrading, I can see where the back slot would be necessary. I thought you had originally asked about the GPS application, and the side slot can be used for that with an adapter. Regarding repair, you'd have to talk with HW. Hopefully, you could get your unit back within a couple of weeks, but you'd want to make them aware of your need for the unit at school. Best Regards,
