How weird, I have never had to use ear phones to get a signal. Mine comes in just fine. You need the head phones plugged in to be able to pick up any signals, but then, at least according to what I read in the manual, you can toggle the speaker on so you don't have to listen with head phones. I have to wear a head set all day on the job, and I can't abide wearing headphones outside of work.
