Dear List,

Despite the spate of trashing the text adventure games that has been going on on this list now for a couple of days, I would like to point out that the games are thoroughly accessible without any speech at all. Also, you can change your reading grade to computer braille if you like. And I would imagine the input as well, though I don't see the need for it. It seems to me that a little fun and levity is acceptable on this device. PC's have had games for many years, as has been pointed out countless times, when this list was clammering for games to be included on the BN.

Of course I'm in favor of anything which would make life easier for the deaf-blind. A person would have to be insane as well as insensitive to oppose any such thing. I'm sure the HW staff is equally supportive, at least in an emotional sense. They do, unfortunately, have to take things into account like cost, demand, and technical plausibility, none of which are things I know about.

But in the meantime, assuming that any individual can simply choose what the company should do based on his/her own interests and needs is just a bit simplistic, in my opinion. We asked for games, for years, and we got them. There's been a tremendous outpouring of wishes for a TTY component, and hopefully it will be answered as well. Just as the callers for games have been fairly vocal in their complaints about HW's choice of games, so there's likely to be an uproar whenever they come up with a TTY solution. It may cost extra money. It may necessitate getting another piece of hardware. We don't know. But the fact is that, if it were as simple as some of you are making it out to be, it would have been there by now.

Rachael, climbing back under her rock.

Games can be educational, too, if they are trivia games, word
games, or math
games.

I think the games on the BN should be accessible to the
deaf-blind. I have
only tried the tutorial game, so I could be wrong. The thing
that bothers
me is some of the braille in the games should have been written
in computer
braille. I couldn't route the cursor to the computereze, so I
couldn't add
them. I understand from reading the manual some games use a lot
of
greater-than less-than signs and it would take up less space on
the display
if they had been surrounded by the proper codes.
