Hi all, hi anne!
A good question, why don't all ttys and tdds nowadays just use a computer communication system? That way, any pc or maybe even ipaq and probably the bn could be used as a tty or tdd. I can understand that, in the beginning, before we had pcs or anything like that, maybe this Baudot was the only thing going because the first ttys were old teletype machines that the newspaper offices let be used for the deaf, and maybe Baudot was the only thing going, but now, pcs and the like have been around long enough that a switch should have happened.
Just my thoughts quite questions on this issue.

Hi all,

I'd like to comment here. I haven't been reading the thread
long, but
Richard is right, it is a hardware issue. If you do not
understand
the difference between regular computer transmission and baudot,
it
will make no sense to you.

As for his assertiong that your argument is based on emotion, I'm
afraid I must concur. You aren't being punished for anything,
Michelle. Unfortunately, Humanware and its competitors are
businesses. They must make a profit. The emotional issue may
make
you feel good to get rid of it, or to blame somebody because
"they're
doing this because we're disabled...", but it isn't so.

Unfortunately, until somebody comes up with a viable cheap
braille
display, the deaf-blind are going to have to pay more; not
because
they have dual disabilities, but because the braille costs more,
period.

Now, if the Deaf Community would give up their TDD's and go for a
communication device not based on baudot, then some of this
debate
would be moot. But, the TDD is here to stay, and that means that
the
deaf-blind folks we know need access. What about a converter
box/device? I dunnow. I'm not a hardware expert.

Ann P.
