I don't know if this will help, but sometimes we have difficulty getting the
infrared on the printer and the BN to cooperate, and a simple reset usually
solves the problem, unless the printer is out of paper. This is with a unit
running 5.1.

Dear Jim and List,

Well, I tried embossing with the MP tonight. I first cleaned the
connections with a dry towel. Then, I plugged everything in and made sure
the plugs were all tight. I may not need it, but I even have a parrallel
cord plugged into the end of the box which is connected to the embosser.

Then, I turned on the embosser and the MP at the same time and tried to
emboss a document. I received the message: "error: 1053 embossing to:
infra100m" (or something to that effect. I tried again and the document
embossed.

I also made sure nothing electronic was on--no heater or PC or anything.

If my problem is an intermittent one, the answer will be a bugger to
discover.

I also want to mention the error message doesn't appear on the braille
display, I only hear it with speech. The speech stutters when the MP is
looking for the infrared device.

I'm not as upset as I was, but I would still like HumanWare to see if they
can find out what's going on with the infrared port. I'm not sure I will be

able to emboss with the MP tomorrow. I don't want to have to buy anything
else. I don't think a serial connection would work because my embosser
requires an rs232 cable with a 9 pin female plug and the BN requires a null
modem cable with a 9 pin female plug. Just having an adapter wouldn't be
enough--the cable would have to match.

I wish to thank all of you on the list for listening and I appreciate all
your posts. Jonathan's post encouraged me to believe that Humanware does
care.

: Hello all,
:
: The device I use is a parallel to infrared adapter. It is more than a
: cable. One connects this device directly to the parallel port of the
: embosser or printer if you please. There is also a fitting on the other
end
: of this device where one could plug in a printer cable. Since I only use
: this device on my embosser, I don't bother with any other cables.
:
: As I was saying the device connects directly to the parallel port on your
: embosser. One must also plug this device into a 120 volt outlet with the
: provided transformer or AC adapter. One places the cable with the
infrared
: device close to the infrared port on the BN. One needs to be certain that
: one has the embosser setup option to infrared. Send data to the embosser
in
: the usual way and if all is well, one is embossing their document which is
: being sent from the adapter to the embosser. One advantage to this system
: is this! After I finish embossing my document, you could come by and
emboss
: a document if you needed to simply by placing your infrared port against
the
: one on the adapter. It seems to work quite well.
:
: I merely called Enabling Technologies and they knew right away what I
needed
: and they sent me the product. If you were to phone the Blazer
manufacturer,
: I think they market a similar product. I think I got mine for around $72
or
: so. If money is an issue, you might try a serial cable to your embosser
: especially if it is a nine pin serial cable. This might work as well and
: not cost as much money. My embosser doesn't have a nine pin serial cable
: and I don't think the serial port is working in my old Juliet Classic. I
: needed to have the parallel infrared adapter so I got it. I too feel the
: alternative being pushed by Humanware is very expensive indeed!
:
: Terri, I wonder whether your AC adapter is plugged in securely with your
: particular adapter. I was just wondering in hopes to find a solution to
: your problem.
