Male connectors have prongs sticking out of them and female connectors have sockets. Example: The prongs on your BN ac adapter that stick into the wall outlet are a male connector and the wall outlet is a female socket. Friend's sister made a comment about this one time with a giggle while trying to plug in some compute cords. With data connectors they just make the prongs and sockets a whole lot smaller.
