I have the western Digital 80 gb hard drive, and although it is powered by usb, there is a seperate ac adapter you can buy which I did, thinking it might help speed up things and keep it from locking up or taking over ten minutes to do many functions, but this is not the case, it is still as slow. The power adapter, is not a usb adapter, it is a brick like power adapter that plugs in to the wall outlet. Hope this hels.
