As a matter of fact, I have encountered much the same problem. I
am using a Bt classic with version 7.0 on a DSL connection. My
PC downloads mail just fine.
What happens with my BN is that the first 80 messages or so
download with good speed and then the other messages download at
a crawl.
A side issue is that lately, when I delete individual messages,
after the sixth message, the BN hangs for about ten to twenty
seconds and then perms the action to finish deleting the message.
The same thing happens if I decide to exit the inbox. After the
sixth message has been sent to the trash folder, then the machine
hangs for about ten to twenty seconds.
Any ideas how to fix this?

As far as I know, the isp is fine. I used the free database
option, but it still slow.
