Okay, but is there a way to set up either wireless or ethernet without having a serial connection?

You can use Wireless as long as you stick with a version of ActiveSync
below 4.0. MS took wireless away for security reasons. Bluetooth still
works though.

Yes, you can use wireless.  I'm sure other people on the list have done
that.  In fact, I believe you can use bluetooth, which is built into the
braillenote, so you'd only need to buy a bluetooth adapter for your
laptop, and it might even be built into your laptop to start with! How
cool would that be?
