I realize this is very much off topic, but what is linux? I know
it's an opperating system, but what is it like? How is it
different from windows? Is their some kind of speech that works
with it?

Adobe reader works fine. I think both Kurzweil and Open Book
read PDF
files. Perhaps the BN folks need to consider a PDF converter?
I've
got PDF2txt on my Linux box, but that won't help.
