So now I'm replying to myself! I just read and deleted some more
email. Tried the Free database" option again and this not I got a
non-zero number. So I'm nuts!

I am using a BN mpower with Keysoft 7.01.
I can't say when it started, but I notice lately that when I have
read and deleted a number of email messages and then go to the
email setup menu and use the "free database" option, the machine
will beep for a little and then return the message "0 bytes
freed."
I don't know what to make of this. Can anyone shed any light?
