Hi Joseph, RFBD uses DAISY standards to make it's digital talking books. The BN running 7.2 has a DAISY book reader built in. The only difference is that an RFBD book requires you to enter a special code, which is the same for every one I might add, to "unlock the book."
For the bookport, I got a little piece of software from RFBD and the bookport transfer software had to some how incorporate this software. When I try to transfer an rfbd book to my bookport the software first asks me to put in this code. I'm guessing that HW would have to modify their bookreader slightly. I don't know exactly how, but do bookshare users have to put in a code when they open up a bookshare book? I'm guessing that HW could do this, or discover how to because their talking book machines are capable of doing it. I just hope they get this sorted out before I pay for an upgrade which will be crippled like this. Any one who is a student and uses an MPower on this list should be advocating to have the RFBD issue fixed in 7.2 before it is released. In order to view these files, a separate player is required, or, if HumanWare could do it, can introduce RFBD support onto Book Reader. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Rusty Perez Sent: Friday, August 04, 2006 10:52 PM To: 'Braillenote List' Subject: RE: [Braillenote] digital talking books It seems that, since the new upgrade to the BN promises a DAISY digital talking book reader , this is a wonderful place for the discussion of and speculation over whether the BN will read NLS digital books. I heard today that the BN will not read RFBD books when it's upgraded. RFBD is, I would guess, the largest producer of DAISY audio digital books. I am disappointed, and frankly, I feel like a DAISY book reader which will not read these protected books is only doing half the job. There should be, as there is with the BookPort, a way to modify my unit, so I can read RFBD books which I use often for work. RFBD charged me $20 I think, but it, plus my BookPort, were the best money I've spent in a long time. Though eventually I suppose I will have to upgrade to 7.2, if it will not read RFBD books, I will feel cheated, and my BookPort will continue to be my DAISY book reader of choice until my BN can do the job. The year for digital format in the U.S. is 2008 and we will see if that is right. Any further discussion of this topic, in my opinion, is not appropriate for this list.
