As strange as this might sound, is it possible that the higher pressure
at a lower altitude had an effect on the units? Considering how small and
fragile some of the parts are, I think it might make sense.

No, that is correct; I was not trying to use any form of internet while I
was in the Napa area, whether that is a wired or wireless card.
The only thing that I can think of that would be in that area in terms of
interference would probably be the multiple units of BrailleNotes, GPS
receivers, and 2-way radios, but we also had these exact same thing come
with us to San Francisco. We had just about 30 units with us during the
time. There was about 30 BrailleNotes and 30 GPS recievers on at any given
time.
Yeah, I did not run into stuttering or locking up problems while I was in
the San Francisco area. And, like I stated earlier; we brought all of the
same interference equipments that we had in Napa with us to San Francisco.
The same pproblem occurred regardless of the time of the day, whether that
is in an open area or in an enclosed area. I mostly found this occuring
while I was in an open area, which I find sort of ironic. I have also
notice this while I was out walking around at midnight, during one of the
nights, and I would think that is a time with less interference.
Well, the part of Napa that I was in there was no cell phone coverage at
all, there were very tall trees, maybe about 10 stories high on average.
The location can be described as a bowl, with trees surrounding us, and
the location being in the lower center part of the bowl. Again, these are
all physical aspects, which I believe should not have any interference
with the performance of the BrailleNote. It didn't just affect the speech,
it also affected the entire BrailleNote, including the Braille Display.
Very strange, , yes. Unusual, yes. Still not sure what is going on.

I take it you were not trying to use your Mpower or one of the PK
units in the Napa, California, area with a wireless CF card or
the wired-in Ethernet CF card when they were stuttering and
locking up.
Because the problem was site-specific, it almost makes me wonder
if there were a powerful radio transmitter near where you were
that was getting its signal into the circuits of the affected
units.
However if you routinely use your unit with no problems in say
downtown San Francisco, which probably has a lot of radio
transmitters for radio stations, TV stations, paging, police,
taxis couriers etc., I am darned if I know why your unit would
stutter and/or lock up in Napa but not San Francisco.
Did the problem seem to get better or worse as you moved around
say in a large building or the Napa area?
Reason I ask, is that if there was so much radio frequency energy
floating around it was interfering with your unit, it would
probably interfere with other electronic things too, like say
cellular telephones, ghetto blasters, car stereos and the like.
