Katie, an SMA won't actually expire, however, it is necessary to use it for the next upgrade, you can't skip upgrades. Also, an SMA is a software maintenance agreement, so hardware upgrades won't necessarily come into it. For instance, I had one SMA for my BN. This gave me two software upgrades. One of them went toward 6.11, the other went toward 7.0. When I got the same BN transplanted into an mPower, which happened between the two software upgrades, this did not affect my SMA count.
