Dear Simon:

Wow your friend certainly has some problems with her telephone
bill.

If your friend thinks her BrailleNote is dialling out when it
shouldn't, the simplest thing to do is just disconnect the
telephone line cord from the BrailleNote.

Unplugging the BrailleNote would not prove much as it has a
rechargeable battery. No, the unit has no firewall or anti-virus
program.

It only has wireless connectivity when a wireless CF card is
inserted into the unit and wireless connectivity has been
selected from the options menu.

Far as I know, the BrailleNote is not designed to connect to the
Internet to download updates etc by itself.

Try having your friend's ISP check their login and logout records
to see if they agree with the telephone company's call log
records. If they don't, then someone who has the same ISP has
politely helped themselves to your friend's telephone line.

Beware of things like cordless telephones connected to the line,
as older models do not verify you are using the handset that came
with the base unit and there are people who will wander around
with a cordless handset turned on just trying to get dial tone.
But when they get it, they typically phone their friends overseas
and rack up incredible bills for the owner of the line.

The BrailleNote uses Windows CE so I suppose it could be attacked
by viruses that will run on that platform.

Never heard of this before.

Good luck.

Brian
