You make a valid point when you mentioned the things about
Jonathan. He was such a salesman for the BrailleNote and almost an
antisalesman for the competition for the competition that he has
placed himself in an untenable position. In fact, I emailed one of
our list members privately and said, "Will the real Jonathan Mosen
please stand up"? Yes, I'm quoting a line from the old game show, to
tell the truth. Before people get upset with me, I understand the
possible need to change jobs. Your post really says it all. To be
real honest, I really wouldn't want to be in either his position or
in the position of Humanware. For all concerned, it is a really
nasty position to be in. This whole situation has been a pr
nightmare for Humanware.

I think the answer for why some folks are taking this so hard is that
Jonathan was many things. He was part of the community, a blind guy much
like many of us. He was part guru. He was the guy that people went to when
they needed help. He was the guy in the know, for many, the voice on the
other end of the radio, or the tutor, the teacher.
People forgot, or never thought about the fact that ultimately he was also
being paid.
This shouldn't discount any of that teaching ETC, but Jonathan was more than
a salesman, a spokesman for HW in many ways.
The community is so small that this could happen.
People don't grow as attached to the CEO of Microsoft or some celebrity
hocking something on TV. Many people on this list followed Jonathan's daily
life, on his blog, on his radio shows. They received phone calls from him
personally trying to solve real problems in their lives.
I agree, it's business, but for many folks the BN represents a chance at
functioning almost normally, and so for a figure who embodied that, to go to
the competition against who he figuratively fought for many years, this is
difficult.

I am a bit confused by this feeling of portrayal being expressed. He
changed jobs he didn't cheat on anyone. Why would any of us changed
employers?
Perhaps they offered him too much money to turn down? Perhaps there were
more challenges and growth opportunities?
Would any of us want to be spoken of like this, if we simply made the
choice to change employers? You would think he was found guilty of treason.
