KC dsl runs through the phone line as as cable doesn't both use modems but they are different. I have dsl and only one phone line. It is much faster then dial up and chpper too depending on who you get it with.

nmisinformed. I have been told by  SBC and Earthlink, tht the
purpose of  DSL is to provide a  second  phone line, but itisnot
considered  "high speed," wiless and is  a lot achepaer than
cable. I was also told tht I could ocntiue  touse  dial-up!  (go
figure!  I'm going to call earthlink again!)

BTW;  YOu ca'tpossibly confuse me becaue I'm already  so
befuddled by this whole business that I think I'll just stay with
plain old dial-up!  (That is even cheaper than DSL!  smile)
