Right. I have a wireless configuration called "Home" that has all my settings with the WEP code. When I want to check E-mail or get on the web with the BN I select that configuration.
Makes life really easy.
I also have a configuration for the local library and one for a hotel I stay at when I'm at a meeting every few months. So, that way I don't have to scan for them each time.

Enjoy your camping trip.

Richard, when you say "set up so that you don't have to scan for your network", do you just mean that you have a connection in the BN for a particular wireless ssid, so that you can just go to email or internet and select that?
Thanks for your comments again about the SSID broadcast being turned off.
My husband was concerned about having the modem on all the time, due to possible damage from lightning or power surges, but a surge protector would help with the latter, and we'd know to turn it off during a storm.

Hi,
I've been using the Linksys Router with the Broadcast turned off
for
a couple of months now. My wife uses it with her laptop.
Once you have it set up on a computer or the BN so you no longer
have
to "scan for wireless networks," then turning off the broadcast
only
means no one else can find your router and hack their way in.
It is the singularly most important thing to do for security.
The broadcast feature is only so a person can find and set up
their
wireless. Or, in the case of open, public, wireless hot spots it
is
so anyone can use it.

This assumes, of course, you have it set so you don't have to
scan
for your network each time.

Have fun,
Richard

Hi Carol,

SSID broadcast is located somewhere in wireless set up. If you
go
into internet explorer, run the following address:

192.168.1.1

Enter "admin", (without the punctuation), in both fields. You
should then be able to go to the "wireless setup" link on the
setup
page for the router. I'm very curious to see if this will still
work with the BN, so I'll stay tuned.

I must see if that's the case with the BN as, if it still works
OK, I'd
quite like to turn mine off as maybe then others have no idea
what you're
using if they play around with their PDA's in your home. (No, I
am
convinced they can't get in anyway but would like just to stop
them even
knowing what the router is.)

Any ideas where you turn off the SSID broadcast, generally. I
have a
Linksys.

Hi Kathy,

No, WEP, if set up right, should not cause problems for the BN.
There have
been instances where the key is difficult to enter on the BN,
usually
because it's case-sensitive. As far as the modem goes, as
Richard already
said, the firewall which is built into the router will keep
anyone from
getting past the modem and into the network. I have the same set
up, and in
over three years, no unauthorized person has ever gotten into the
system.

However, I'm not sure about this, but something tells me that if
SSID
broadcast is turned off, the BN will not be able to see the
network
wirelessly, which also defeats the whole purpose. I really
think, if the
network is secure, there shouldn't be anything to worry about.
Feel free to
call me if you want to go over this in more detail.

Sarah

Hi, Sarah,
Thanks for the post. You've probably already seen my
modification, that I should have said modem and not router that
he wants off most of the time, which defeats the whole purpose of
having wireless.
The suggestion of turning off the SSID broadcast has been passed
on to him, so perhaps that will help.
You mention WEP. Am I remembering correctly that that can cause
problems with the BN?
Thanks again for your post.
Kathy

Hi Kathy,

Rich and I leave our router on all the time and there is no
problem. There's really no reason to switch it off. If there is
a worry about security, set up the router with WEP, and no one
will be able to access your network unless they have the WEP key.
