The cable modem is not going to be able to get through the router to your computer. Also, like the router it does not have an off on switch either therefore it is made to be left on all the time. Setting WEP will take care of everything.

Richard, Thanks for your post.  Apparently I misspoke, I should
have said modem, since we have two separate pieces.  He does not
want the modem on for fear of people getting into the system.  I
have just told him about turning off the SSID broadcast, so maybe
that will make things easier.
I certainly appreciate your comments, along with everyone else
who has responded to my question.
Sorry about the confusion about leaving the modem off rather than
the router.
I must say that the wireless on the BN surely does work well!
