Hello Carol,
It is my practice to release a storage cad, when not in use.
However, it remains in the slot. Primarily, I use the
right-hand slot, with an adapter for the card. However, on the
occasions when I use the back slot, I can release the card and
still keep in in the slot. Of course, in each case, the cards
are slightly exposed. (Right now, I have a CF card in the
right-hand slot, but not all the way in.)
