An SDK (software development kit) is a program that allows anyone
with that program to write applications for a certain device, in
this case the BrailleNote family. This means that anyone who
wants to could write programs for a BN, and we would not have to
wait for HW to release things as much. Of course these
self-developed programs could not be guaranteed, and I imagine HW
would have some sort of disclaimer stating that any damage to a
BrailleNote or VoiceNote product as a result of any software
modified or compiled with this SDK is the responsibility of the
user. Still, being able to write a simple metric converter and
plop it in the Main Menu with a hotkey would be really nice!
Have a great day,
Alex

What is SDK, I am sorry for ignorance, and what will it do?

Sdk has been promised for year now and never delivered.

One more thought on SDK's - has there been any mention on, *if*
it was
released, if it'd be a free product, or a paid system? I
remember
Blazie's developer toolkit was for pay, and was in fact quite
expensive, which prohibited me from ever experimenting with true
C
coding for the Braille 'n Speak. I actually would like to
release apps
I write as free programs, but of course if the SDK ends up being
for
pay I will end up having to charge for my apps.

I do have a few specific ideas for apps. Some of my ideas might
be
also in the minds of others, but I'm open to competition :) I'm
considering some more "real" games (not that Inform is bad, but
I'm
thinking things like card games and such), as well as some
Internet
connectivity apps - an IRC chat program would really make me
drool. I
have actually coded an IRC client for blind people - technically
two,
since I wrote one, then abandoned it for a second project - so I
understand the IRC protocol inside and out. Along with this I'm
thinking some simple apps like a unit converter and maybe a
basic
check register with embossing capabilities. I actually did an
experiment or two writing some very basic apps in Inform and
compiling
them to Z-code - and it works for simple stuff like calculations
and
so on - but it obviously won't come anywhere near supporting
complex
apps like an IRC client or a checkbook. A card game might be
possible
in Inform - it's one of my current test projects. (Although I
have to
first figure out what happened to my presently dead BN.)

Dear Flint:
Welcome to the list from Ottawa in Canada.
Well since you have read the list archives, you know Humanware
has not released an SDK for third-party developers for the
BrailleNote/VoiceNote family of products.
For lack of anyone better to contact, I recommend you write to:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
He is the group president and if anyone can persuade Humanware
to
release the SDK, it would be him.
Do you have specific programs you would like to write for the
BrailleNote, or is it just a general interest at this time?
Brian
