Hello everyone, I have been thinking lately about some of what has happened on this list; and as a result of this have started to think that maybe some on this list do not understand how software development works. Granted there are some on this list who do understand this. To you I say great and please feel free to use the delete key if you already know this stuff. To those who do not understand software development, I hope you will read on.
My husband was a software developer for a major telecommunications company for some 15 1/2 years and this is how I have learned what I know about software development. He and others are certainly welcome to add to this discussion. It is my understanding that software is tested to make sure that it works as it is supposed to. There is documentation which is written and any good software developer also does heavy documentation. I am also told that just because a software is tested and works does not mean that all of the bugs will be caught in the testing before it is released as a beta or even in final release. This is why it is so important to be very specific about what you were doing when a certain situation, such as locking up, occurs. This specific information is needed so that the problem can be duplicated. Once the problem can be duplicated, work can begin on a patch to fix the problem. I have been told that it is imposible to catch absolutely everything in testing. It just doesn't happen. You can test and test and test and still not catch everything. This is the nature of software. As someone on the list has said previously, there is no perfect computer. They are right about that. I hope that this explains a little about software development from a layman's viewpoint. When we discuss potential bugs in the software, let's all be prepared to give specific details about what we were doing and what happened to cause the problem so that it can be duplicated. This is the way to help HW fix an already good product so that it works better. Take care. **All outgoing messages scanned using Norton Antivirus 2006.
