I use both the millennium 20 and the BN. I work a good deal with insert mode going on the millennium, but Oh, when I want anything written to go only at the end, that's so handy. It means there's no changing anything in the file before the last character without actually meaning to.

I am not sure why an overwrite command would be used. You can use Ctrl comma to delete a character, and then put the right letter back in. That's about the best way I know to do it.
