Alan,

I do have other versions which I keep similarly to yourself and have no difficulty finding relevant books and passages. It's just practice and quicker thinking which comes with familiarity!

For example, I have the whole of the New Testament in a file and label it accordingly. I then use the search facility within Keysoft to locate quickly what I need. I first locate the book and chapter (EG 1 Corinthians 3), then go for the verse number. I'm usually there before my seeing friends and have been known to find passages etc that we're finding difficult to recall quickly.

I too used a BLT for many years but I can honestly say that I've now got very used to the PK. Yes, I too would love to be able to use the joy stick and effectively always land on the next verse . . . but that's the same concept as wanting the joy stick always to take you directly to the next line following a carriage return.

Keep persevering! <Smile>

Hi Carol:

I too use my BN to study the bible. I keep a whole book in a folder rather then individual chapters. I have an old testament and a new testament folder but that's the only division I make. I agree that finding a particular chapter quickly is a challenge. It was easy for me on a Braille Lite, but of course I knew it's UI much better.

I think the easiest way will be to create a unique searchable character before each chapter number. I have considered doing that but haven't gotten around to it yet. If I try it I'll try to remember to post a note to the list about it. Specifically it would look like this.

dash number sign or . number sign before chapter numbers. -# or .#

Creating it in the first place might be a piece of work, particularly as the BN doesn't seem to have a macro language, but once done I think it would work well.

One of the other things that I'd like to experiment with if I could get the upgrade properly installed in my PK is using the joy stick to move by verse. I believe that this would be a much bigger project but consider this.

Suppose you defined the page as having a width of 250 characters. And suppose there was a return after each verse. Now, you could search for the book you wanted in the old or new testament folder; find the chapter; and tap down a given number of joy stick taps to find the verse you want. The technology is right for it, but creating the version of the bible that would work that way is the challenge.

As for your comment about the other product, I would never be able to use it in public as the hardware is so awkward and it really doesn't work well as a Braille only device like my PK does.

Don't, haven't really sussed that one. I just know it's a problem with the Bible when you want the whole Bible in its various books and those split also into chapters within a folder. This makes a total of 11090 HTML files in a folder (which is really my ideal) but it's unworkable. It can take 10 minutes or so to get a listing of these files, which is why I have had to use a series of favorites (shortcut files) to accomplish what I want. Whilst this is largely acceptable, I know for a fact that this is one of the points where the PacMate does not fall over. (Oh, how I wish that my BN, so good in every other way) just gave me this flexibility! I really don't understand quite why not!)

How many files in a folder do you have to have before it starts getting really annoying. I have a classic, so it might be different on mPowers. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Carol Pearson" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I have a similar problem and have probably done it to death in the past! I really long for the day when the number of files in a folder doesn't hang up, or at the very least, hold up the system!

For a moment, let us leave the Daisy issue behind. I have a folder, and
since I work with individuals on technological subjects, I named this
folder "Rich Tech Records" I know, imagination is obviously not my
strong suit. However, here is the point of my narrative. I have a four
gig micro drive on which this folder resides. There are 704 files in
this folder. None of the files exceeds 40 kb. If I attempt to open
this folder with the Braillenote, it takes approximately 3 minutes. The
Pac Mate, on the other hand, opens and views the folder nearly
instantly.
The only way I was able to manage the folder on the Braillenote was to
split the contents into six folders.

Hi Mary Ellen,

I think there's two separate issues. One is that not all Bookshare
books are formatted 100% correctly, and the other is that Windows CE
4.2 doesn't cope well with very large numbers of files (I think it
starts getting iffy much above 1000). There aren't any problems with
the actual download as far as I know.

we'll have to go to a new operating system to fix the problem with
large numbers of files.

regards,

Andy.
