Well of course you are right Karl:

Access tech companies need to make a profit or good people won't invest or work in the field; but customers are understandably frustrated by paying 3 or 4 times what sighted people pay. The best answer to this is to find a middle man (a nonprofit like Benatech or aph or afb) to raise the money needed to bring the price down to the level that able bodied people pay. It's been my experience that when access tech companies try to reduce prices to make lots more sales the strategy fails. It leads them to do silly things like obsolete products quickly thereby forcing customers to buy the next generation long before it's really necessary. I don't think customers should pay for the right to beta test for an access tech company!

One of the things I really appreciate about P D H is that they don't miss lead the customer by telling them they can buy a piece of commercial software and run it on their PDA. You and I both know that making a commercial dictionary like that work under CE with JFW would require a huge investment of time and it's beyond 99% of the products users. This solution may be expensive, but at least it's honest.

Off my soap box!
Alan

It seems to me that this arbitrary price point given with no idea what it
really costs for HW to purchase licenses, code the special Braille
interface, test the software, market and support it is a bit like figuring
that we can loose money on each sale but we'll make it up in volume.

I agree. I think the dictionary should be sold for something like $60 (I
think that's £30?). Thanks for your thoughts.

I do know how hard the work is, and appreciate it. But if they
lowered the price to around $60 then more people would be willing to
purchase it as an add-on and they would actually make more money.
They would sell more copies at the $60 price than they would at the
$199 so it would in reality be more cost effective.

At the lower cost, from discussion on this list, most BN owners would
definitely purchase this option. However, at the higher cost, only
those who are able to get the government to add this will get it.
Plus, most of the government purchases would only be on new device
purchases not as add-ons. I realize there are some of us on this list
that can actually afford this if they want, but the majority cannot.
We do good just to keep up with upgrades that are not provided by the
government after the original purchase.
