Well, as far as I can tell, it is only if their cable companies allow it. I
was listening to the security now podcast (Leo Laporte from tech tv) and
they were discussing this very issue. If there was a hack for this problem,
they would have mentioned it. They talked about why this is happening
because of security levels. Currently, there isn't a way to avoid the
security (even if you were okay sending non-secure email).

If you want to discuss this any more, we should probably continue this
off-list since it is beginning to stray from strictly related to the BN. I
started this because of trying to have this access with the bn, but if we
don't have an answer, I think we should probably discuss the whys off-list.

Hello again,

Perhaps those on cable can step forward to tell us how they got around this
problem when using an M-power. I certainly would like to know as well.

Thanks, Jim. Yes, I only use wireless with my BN. It is the smtp for
outgoing email that is the problem. Inside my own house, no problem.
Probably at another person's house using insight, probably no problem. Any
where else, ie school, and no go for sending. I can receive my email from
any where just not sending.

Hi again Cindy and list,

You could easily be experiencing a security issue with your cable provider.
I'm assuming you are using a wireless router with your cable system.

I'll say this: I have gone to other places where a wireless connection was
on the cable system. I was able to download my mail from their system but I
couldn't send my mail till I got home. Since I have DSL through my phone
company, it probably works a bit differently. I have been in various hotels
in other cities and I have been able to download my Email just fine if I was
using an open wireless system or could get the security code of the system I
was about to use. I could send and receive Email through these systems in
other cities. I went to a friend's house and could send and receive Email
from there once he gave me the security to his system. I said all this to
illustrate that receiving and sending Email from your specific address is
possible using a BN to do the job. This of Corse is not without challenge
but it can be done! I have friends who are on cable with a wireless router.
It would be nice to see if they could send and receive Email from their
Specific addresses if they came to visit. I do know that when I visited the
friend with cable, I could receive my Email but couldn't send anything I
wrote out. This is despite the fact that the authentication was set to yes.
I believe I understand where you are coming from but don't have an immediate
solution at this time.

Unfortunately, we only have one cable internet provider and I do not want to
go to DSL nor do I know if the DSL providers (I know of only one at the
moment) are any better in this regard.

Cindy
PS They neglect to tell you these things before you sign up.

Hello!

I'd get an Isp which allows for one to send and receive Email from most
wireless connections. I don't settle for half a loaf, I want the whole loaf
so to speak so get an ISp which will enable you to do what you wish to
accomplish. I realize that this may be easier said than done depending on
where you live.

My unit isn't working at free unfiltered hotels and coffee houses because of
road runner--my isp.

Kathleen, Cindy and list,
I have used my unit with an Ambicom WiFi card
on a number of occasions. I have used it in
places such as Starbucks, hotels, and
airports and I can confirm Kathleen's words
that it is in fact ISP-INDEPENDENT. In one
occasion, I was able to send and receive
email through a hotel's WiFi connection.
HTH,
Joseph
