Cindy, I really like your approach of experimenting. I think many of these issues could be handled by the person with the problem if they would experiment a bit.
For those of us not in a particular situation, it's hard to give specific help at times since isp's and such do differ quite a bit. So, don't be afraid to experiment with different connect techniques. Many probably won't work, but you just might stumble across a solution as Cindy has done here.
