I too have had file loss. The most recent occurred at csun, 2006 when I went to Mike May's session telling us what was new on the gps 3.5. I hit the control s on my qwerty keyboard exited into the main menu when I got back to the hotel room, no file none whatsoever. I have also had a situation where the middle of the file simply vaporized. I haven't a clue why the erasure stopped with page 26, I mean it should have taken it all. Happily, I had a backup so no harm was done.
I'm interested, had your son done any resets prior to printing?
I notice if I do a reset that will also cause files to get lost.
One thing I most sincerely hope is we could get a hardware upgrade with a memory increase to at least a gb. I am saying this because with the dictionary running and the gps on my Braille Note mpower and Voice Note mpowers I am constantly having to do resets and I have noticed last night I had to do a jkl reset in order for the dictionary to even open so a memmory increase is most definitely needed. Ok that's it for me but yes, file loss has been an ongoing problem and I too started out with ks 3 and have learned the hard way to put everything on flash cards.

I've been using Braille Notes since Keysoft version 3. Yes, I've lost a number of files over the years. Back when I first started, working with documents on the Braille Note was sort of like playing Russian roulette. Over the years, I've observed that this file loss has manifested itself in a couple of ways. In one scenario, the file would be reduced to 623 bytes, with no usable content in the file. In another scenario, it would appear that the file was undamaged if you transferred it to a PC and looked at its size in Windows Explorer, but somehow an end-of-file character would be inserted in the file so that if you opened it on the Braille Note you couldn't advance past the first character. Both scenarios involve some sort of faulty memory management issue either in Keyword or in Windows CE itself.
From a practical standpoint the end result is still the same; the file's
toast. Sadly, these sorts of file loss can still occur even in Keysoft version 7.2, but the incidence is much less frequent. If your son's Braille Note is using an earlier version of Keysoft, it's a good idea to upgrade it, as he'll be less apt to lose data. Hopefully memory management will be even better in Keysoft version 8.

The same rule of thumb for working with documents on a PC applies when working with documents on a Braille Note. Make a backup copy of the file. For good measure, store it on a PC or some sort of nonvolatile medium.

Tom
