I cannot help but feel that what I am about to say may well cause
offence to one or two people; but, please believe me, that is
certainly not my intention. We surely should bear in mind that
Humanware is a worldwide organisation, and when it produces
upgrades, for which it rightly charges, these upgrades must
appeal to an international customer base and not be wholly
specific to one country; a policy which would soon alienate those
not living in that country. It is obviously neither fair nor
right if I pay full price for an upgrade which bestows little
benefit, while in another country purchasers rightly rejoice at
the added facilities. Now of course nobody forces me to buy an
upgrade; however, if I require the following upgrade, which may
well advance my use of the device, I will be unable to receive it
unless I first buy the previous one, no matter how useless it may
be to me personally. I rejoice for my friends in the States who
can now draw publications from Bookshare, especially since this
feature's introduction brought about the ability of the
Braillenote family to unzip files; unintentional though I gather
this extension of the facility was. I am indeed also pleased
that they will soon be able to read RFB and B books on their
Braillenote units; (pardon me if that lettering is not quite
right), though these, like Bookshare, are not available outside
the States. Time and time again, I read calls for facilities
which will effect a comparatively small number of people, but for
which the majority would be expected to pay. Yet to these
people, what they are asking for, may be of considerable personal
importance. Why should they be denied because people in other
countries cannot take advantage of these specialised programs?
I recently purchased The Concise Oxford Dictionary for my
Mpower. To me, this is certainly a most useful facility; yet I
would not presume to suggest that it should be part of an
upgrade. I would like to suggest that future upgrades should
only offer advances in general programming and improvement in
performance, but that features which are country specific should
be offered as "add-ons", in the same way as is the dictionary or
GPS program. As I duck down behind my parapet, what are your
views?
