The only batteries that I think I've ever found a bit tricky to replace
are batteries for Braille quartz watches. Otherwise, I've never had a
problem replacing batteries for anything. Frankly, even if one had
motor issues to deal with, I'm sure they could find someone to assist
them in replacing a battery.
I might even buy an extra battery for my mPower so that I could always
keep one charged and thus ready to go. It is unfortunate that things
are as they are. However, I would have to say that if my Braillenote
were under warranty, I wouldn't let just anyone try to match and replace
the battery. First, it would void the warranty, and second, what if,
for instance, the batteries parameters did not exactly match those in
the original battery and thus damage occurred to my unit?
Then, it would have to go back to California, and I would pay a bigger
chunk of change than I would have had to pay if I got the battery
replaced by HumanWare.
So, until HumanWare redesigns the Braillenote with user replaceable
batteries or until my warranty runs out, I guess I'll have HumanWare do
it.
I have seen the Braille Sense and the Voice Sense as well as the Icon
from Levelstar. All of these devices have user replaceable batteries,
and it is not difficult to do.
