Dear Terry and lists:

R. F. B. and D. digital books are distributed at the moment on
CD.

You can copy the encrypted R. F. B. and D. digital talking book
files from their CD to an SD card or USB Drive (USB Key etc) on
your PC.

Then in order to play the R. F. B. and D. books, the unit you
wish to play them on must have a UAK (User Authorization Key)
installed on it.

Each player, be it your Mpower, V. R. Stream or a PC with Daisy
player software, must have its very own UAK to play R. F. B. and
D. digital books.

I believe R. F. B. and D. has said they will charge $20 plus $6
or so for shipping per UAK.

I'm not certain if you were to order a UAK for each of:

Your Mpower,
V. R. Stream and
PC with DAISY player software if you would pay three shipping
charges, or, if they were all ordered at once, let you pay just
one shipping charge for all UAK ordered at the same time.

At $20 per UAK, for three of them you would pay:

$20 times 3 equals $60
Plus $6 for shipping but they might charge $18 for shipping,
So your total due for three UAK would be either $66 or $78.

The UAK charge is made only once for each player. So unless your
player breaks and you replace it with another one, you need never
pay another UAK fee to R. F. B. and D. as long as you live.

Now NLS will also require a UAK to play their digital books, but
it has been said here on the list that NLS will not charge for
issuing UAK.

Why does R. F. B. and D. charge $26 for issuing a UAK and NLS
not?

Beats me!

Possibly NLS is budgeted for this administrative work and R. F.
B. and D. isn't.

You would have to request an explanation from R. F. B. and D. of
why they charge for issuing a UAK.

Oh and you do have to also pay your annual membership fee to R.
F. B. and D. in order to borrow books, either on 4-track cassette
or CD from them.

Because I was first enrolled as an R. F. B. and D. borrower years
ago, I get my membership with them free for the rest of my
natural life.

However, as I am living outside the USA, I'm not eligible to
borrow their digital talking books.

Wild eh?

Take care.
