I would recommend that you bring the offending document into Microsoft
word, press f12 to bring up the "save as" dialog, and tab to the "file
type" combo box and choose "rtf" as your file format.  This might
preserve more of the formatting than .txt, which preserves no
formatting.

although it is reading all Microsoft word documents I had received
