Hi Sharonda,
I think I have an alternative solution:
rather than backing up files, I recommend
that you export the files on your BrailleNote
using certain type. Backul means that all
files on a given folder will be "copied" to
another location, whereas when exported, the
files that needs to be translated from, say,
braille to text will be copied and translated
at the same time.
Here's the procedure:
1. From Main Menu, go to File
Manager/Translate File/Export.
2. At the drive prompt, select the source
drive (likely Flash Disk). At the source
folder name prompt, choose the folder where
you've stored your files.
3. At the file prompt, you have several
options:
* To translate all files, just type SPACE
with dots 3-5 (I forgot the QT command). Or,
* Press SPACE to go to the first file on the
file list, press ENTER with dots 2-3-5-6
(Again, I forgot the QT command) to select
all files (available with KeySoft 7.5 or
higher).
* While browsing the list of files: if you
want to select some files to comy, mark them
by pressing SPACE with M (CTRL plus SPACE on
QT).
* If you know the name of the file, type it.
* If you know the characters that make up a
name of the file, type the part of the file
name then put wildcards. If it is a single
character wild card, tyse SPACE with dots
2-3-6 (question mark on BT; I forgot QT
command, sorry); if it is a multiple
character wildcard, type SPACE with dots 3-5
on the BT. Note that you must type the part
of the file name and then put the wildcards
(see below for explanations).
After using one of the options, press ENTER.
4. KeySoft then says, "Export to which
device?" If you are going to copy the files
to a storage device, press ENTER (or type "f"
for "file"); if you are going to copy the
files to a serial device such as another
BrailleNote or a computer running terminal
emulation srogram (such as HyperTerminal),
press S for serial port.
5. If choosing file: KeySoft then says,
"export as which file type?" Choose a file
type that you can use to view information on
another device. You can choose one of the
following types: ASCII (txt) text; Microsoft
Word (doc); Word Perfect 5.1 (wp5); Plain
Braille (brf); Rich Text Format (rtf) text.
Choose one of the file types then press
ENTER.
5. Then KeySoft prompts, "Destination
drive?" Choose the external storage media
that you want to use to store resulting files
- SD card, CF card, USB drives, etc. Choose
a drive then press ENTER. (For USB storage
devices, press h for "Hard Disk.")
6. At the folder name prompt, select the
folder where you want to store these files.
You can select an existing folder or type a
new folder name. When you are done, press
ENTER.
At this point, BrailleNote will copy and, if
necessary, translate the files in the source
folder. After few moments, BrailleNote
should say, "number of files exported."
If you are using a serial port, be sure that
your target device - the device that is set
to receive the files - is ready. If using
another BrailleNote, the target BN should be
in Import mode (Import item from Translation
Menu). If using a computer, the profram
should be set to receive the incoming data.
After choosing the file type as above,
BrailleNote will say, "device ready" or
similar. Press y to start sending
information. On the target device - either a
BrailleNote or another computer - be sure to
say 5S or OK to start receiving data. After
few moments, both devices should say number
of files exported/imported.
Few terms:
* Wildcard: a wildcard is a character that
represents certain characters. For example,
if the file name is called comjohn," there
would be numerous possibilities. A file
would be called "john" and another might be
called "john2." If we place a wildcard after
the word "john," the computer will interpret
this information as, "find all files that
contain the name john."
I guess this would be enough. Was my
procedure clear enough?
Cheers,
Joseph P.S. I did confirm this procedure on
my BrailleNote and it works. BTW, if
Infrared and/or Bluetooth is added along with
file and serial port, this would mean
transmitting information wireless from one
BrailleNote to another or from a BrailleNote
to a computer and vice versa.

Subject: [Braillenote] Backing Up Files
Hi Friends!
I am planning to give my BNMPower to a high
school student who has no
notetaker. I have many files that I want to
keep. My brain is not
working well right now. I need help in this:
If I back up my files onto an external drive,
how can I use these
files at a later time? Is that possible to do
without a BN? If so,
how?
Thank you all.
Sharonda
